Option 1 - Sew On
The easiest way to attach a leather tag is to sew it on. You'll need:
- Sewing needle.
- Thread. I love using a contrasting color to add an extra pop of color.
Step 1. Position your tag and use a pencil to lightly mark the location of the holes. This will help ensure the tag doesn't slip while you sew.
Step 2. Sew the tag on.
Step 3. Show off your new bling.
Option 2 - Rivets
This option is a bit harder, and requires you to punch holes in whatever you're attaching the tag to. If you think you may change your mind about placement, or want to remove your tag in the future, I recommend sewing it on.
You will also want to sew it on if the combined thickness of the tag and whatever you attach it to is significantly different from the length of the rivet post. If the combined thickness is more, the rivet won't set at all. If the rivet post is much longer than the combined thickness, the rivet is unlikely to set correctly, and may break.
If you choose to use rivets, you'll need:
- 2 double cap rivets (included with your tag)
- A way to punch holes in whatever you're attaching your tag to. You can use an awl, one side of a pair of scissors, a sewing stiletto, basically anything that will punch a clean hole.
- Hard surface, like a smooth concrete floor.
- Hammer
Step 1. Position your tag and use a pencil to lightly mark the location of the holes. This will help ensure the tag doesn't slip while you set the rivets.
Step 2. Using the pencil marks, punch holes where the rivets will go.
Step 3. Thread the rivet through the tag and your chosen item and connect the cap.
Step 4. Place the rivet on your hard surface and strike it with the hammer several times, making sure you are striking straight down. This will ensure the rivet sets correctly.
Step 5. Repeat for the second rivet.
Step 6. Admire your work.
